Abhisit: Reconciliation bill is divisive

The proposed national reconciliation bill could lead to severe political conflict and social division, Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Tuesday.

The unity bill proposed by the 2006 coup leader and current leader of the Matubhum Party, Gen Sonthi Boonyaratgalin, could create another round of social division and political violence, Mr Abhisit said.

The country’s justice system could also be damaged if the law is approved the House of Representatives, he added.

geoffo 38 - "Imagine if Mr T had been in charge-based on the drug war evidence - what do you think would have happened."
Imagine if Mr AV had been in charge-based on the 2009/2010 crackdowns evidence - what do you think would have happened.

Imagine if Mr AV had 2.5 years to investigate the drug war, and could resolve a single of supposedly 2500 cases?

D34. Are you the official PTP historian.

You ignore the hospital rampage, M79 attacks from Lumpini and other incidents designed to escalate the tension.

The Thai Army and AV should be commended for their patience in handling an extreme situation.

Imagine if Mr T had been in charge-based on the drug war evidence - what do you think would have happened.

D34: Selective memory a poor substitute for a reasoned argument. Is that how it went. Reconciliation offer, then 40,000 soldiers? Nothing happened in between? Were you here and conscious at the time?

D13: It's called sarcasm. It is not always the most appropriate form of humour to use to get your point across, especially in this type of forum, but the gaspingly blatant disconnect of actual reconciliation from what is occurring in this government leaves not many options.

D10's point is well made and spot on.

englishbob 10 - The leader of the 2006 coup, the man who proposed the bill, is a coalition partner of TS?

In 2010 AV proposed his reconciliation plan, the Road Map. One week later, 40,000 troops armed with live ammo were ordered to remove all protesters against his government by force. 90 casualties and over 1000 injuries followed. And the Road Map? Forgotten.

bikeme #27 - Have u read the proposed bills? The word hatred comes from you not me. I have many friends who are member of Prachathipat party. I have many friends who are also their supporters. Many of them want to have alternate voice but not the way their present leaderships dealing with the national divide. Ever since Prachathipat party collapsed under the threat of Suthep (bringing mob to BKK), the new leaderships have been arrogant, confrontational, corrupt, and have no direction. They have never won an election ever since.

bluebkk #15 - Can u tell me how many comments/opinions I labeled (your word) them as irrelevant, simply assumption, speculation. You used the word "EVERY". How much lower can you go, how much lower can you sink? BTW, this is not forum section of BP.

I’m not sure I understand exactly what Mr Abhisit is trying to achieve, a discussion forum, something to televise! He's good at talking however it's actions that speak louder than words and Gen Sonthi Boonyaratgalin has put pen to paper and come up with a bill that is being heard loud and clear. Reconciliation is on the table surely it would be wise to move forward with it rather than try to derail it because what’s the alternative ?

I will support bula on this. Abhisit did give the order to use the force that was used during the protests. Their is evidence abound to prove that. The BBC for one. The Thai police for another.
Under Abhisit Thailand was also the most censored country more so than China. Human rights state that.
