The Meteorological Department on Tuesday morning issued a warning for people in the Northeast and the East to prepare for widespread scattered rain with heavy falls in some areas and the danger of floods today and over the next few days.

The department said the southwest monsoon is prevailing over Thailand, the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. This will cause widespread scattered rain on the Northeast and the East.

People living near hillsides and waterways in Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnatcharoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Chanthaburi and Trat should prepare for heavy rain and possible flash flooding, it warned.

Destroyed watershed from burning for contract farming is a major issue in the flooding. This year it was far worse than ever, with vast areas of mountain watershed ravaged in Nan, Uttaradit, Chiang Rai and other Provinces. Where once stood beautiful forest is burnt land with not even trees left. Some so steep no crop will grow and now ripe for erosion. The flash flooding and run off will be worse this year even if there is 1500 mm of rain instead of 1800mm. If the cause of the problem is not eliminated how can you expect to control the floods? If the burning isn't stopped and the watershed reforested, it will get worse and worse. This flooding is caused by men and only men can fix it. They have to take care of the problem at its start, not spend all their money and energy on stop gap measures that will never solve the problem in the end.
