Big Ben to be renamed Elizabeth Tower

Britain's famous parliament clock tower is to be renamed Elizabeth Tower in honour of the queen's diamond jubilee, officials announced on Tuesday.

The change comes after dozens of lawmakers signed up to a campaign to change the name of the tower -  officially named the Clock Tower but commonly known as Big Ben - in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's 60th year on the throne.

Big Ben is technically the name of the huge bell at the top of the 96-metre (316-foot) tower, one of London's best-loved landmarks.

I do admire HM Elizabeth II for her many years of serving as the symbolic head of the nation and the Commonwealth. But this is a bizarre way to honour her. She has had nothing to do with Big Ben, so why rename it for her. Politicians everywhere seem to be a strange lot.

How ridiculous, is the british parliament taking lessons from the Tha one?

"Lawmakers have accepted that the iconic tower, which sounds out the hours over central London with distinctive "bongs", will continue to be known colloquially as Big Ben."

This is, IMHO, "silly." As the above quote illustrates, it will, for all practical purposes, be called, 'Big Ben.'

I think they could have found a more appropriate way to honor the British Queen.

Ironic since Big Ben actually works for a living by keeping and giving the people of London the correct time 24/7.

Perhaps interesting that that tower gets a new name, perhaps not.
The name 'Big Ben' though, refers to the large bell that is in use inside the tower.
