Defence volunteers slain in Pattani

Two territorial defence volunteers were killed in a drive-by shooting in Pattani’s Saiburi district on Friday morning, the chief of Saburi police station Pol Col Asis Umayee said.

The victims were identified as Krissana Thepsao, 34, and Wirat Inthong-aiad, 42, both defence volunteers of the district.

Witnesses told police the victims were travelling in a pickup truck on the Ban Jakong-Ban Namkok road at Moo 6 in tambon Paseyavor, when gunmen on another pickup truck opened fire on them with M16 assault rifles and 9mm handgun.

This is not a civil war. It is a small group of people who want to form their own country. It is in part retaliation for the murder of 28 people in a mosque almost 10 years ago by men dressed in black. You are correct in saying the government must do more to stop the killings. I'll add they should do so without becoming murderers themselves. The "rebels" are cowards who attack unarmed people. They need to be stopped.

I really don't understand the lack of care on the government’s part towards the non-stop killing of Thais in the southern provinces. Each day there are killings, bombings, and murders of innocent Thai civilians both Buddhists and Muslims, teachers, monks, farmers plus the soldiers and defense volunteers. This is on Thai soil! How the current and past governments can continue to ignore this 10 year old civil war is beyond me. It’s because nobody cares! To prove my point, I’ll bet if this gets posted, it will be the only discussion on today’s killing.
