Don Mueang airport to reopen Aug 1

Don Mueang airport will reopen for commercial aviation on Aug 1, not on Oct 1 as earlier planned, Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong said on Wednesday.

“After its opening, Don Mueang airport will become another important source of revenue for the country, in addition to Suvarnabhumi airport,” Mr Kittiratt said.

Does anyone know how often Don Mueang runways have undergone major repairs in its long history? Regarding Suvarnabhumi, can any civil engineers offer an explanation why runways just six years old need such extensive repairs. Are "partial disintegrations" expected after such a relatively short time?

I am curious as to how Don Mueang will be "another important source of revenue for the country".

I seem to recall that they are offering a discount to airlines moving over there ... so less income for AOT, while adding more operating expenses to run DM. Perhaps he has fantasies of Nok and Air Asia doubling the number of flights and a gazillion more tourists coming, but then Nok doesn't really bring anyone in from outside the country, hmmmmm.

You have to love the PTP's view of economics through rose colored glasses, everything is bright and prosperous.

Guess they are trying to get all the budget airlines moved in before the next major flood starts and they all change their mind!

Hope they fixed the runways after they were under water for a few months.

After the flooding last year Don Mueang Airport was told us due to reopen in March 2012, wasn't it??

'“After its opening, Don Mueang airport will become another important source of revenue for the country, in addition to Suvarnabhumi airport,” Mr Kittiratt said.'

Then, why was it closed? Whose idea was that?

The title of the article states DONG Muang, then in the first sentence it is Don Muang. Amazing!
