Canada to open embassy in Myanmar

Canada is to open an embassy in Myanmar for the first time, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced Friday, citing recent reforms as a reason for engagement with the longtime army-run nation.

"I am pleased to announce that Canada is planning to open an embassy in Myanmar,'' Baird told reporters in a teleconference from Bangkok, referring to Myanmar by its former name.

"There's been an incredible amount of reform in the country in the past 18 months,'' the minister said. "We're impressed with that progress, but there's still more progress that's required.''

Nice go Canada, get in early and develop good relationships. Perhaps Canadian citizens will be given equal treatment should they wish to retire there and perhaps own a small house and property.
