Assad 'losing control' of Syria

The White House said Wednesday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was "losing control'' of his country following a suicide bombing in Damascus that killed three top security chiefs.

"It's clear that the Assad regime is losing control of Syria,'' National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said, stressing the urgent need for a political transition to avoid a "lengthy and bloody sectarian civil war."

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi condemned a suicide bombing which killed three Syrian security chiefs on Wednesday, in a telephone call with his counterpart in Damascus.

Have any of you posters ever been to Syria? You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a poster or picture of their 'beloved' President Bashar al-Assad. It's sort of like North Korea. Syria has been ruled by the corrupt al-Assad family dynasty for decades, and their people have suffered at the hands of the Bathists for too long. If it weren't for Russia & China, and Iran, this evil regime would have already been thrown out of power.

Although it is undeniable Assad is a butcher and he needs to go, there are a couple of things we need to remember.

    1) Syria is the only secular state in the entire region apart from Israel.

    2) If Assad falls and the country just becomes another typical Muslim state with all its own oppressive mechanism in place, some things may be considered to have changed for the better but others, for the worse.

Syria has missed a historic opportunity to become an open secular society and create real democracy and democratic freedoms. Instead is squandered this opportunity. Very unfortunate for this part of the world.

I see that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has his familiy in many Goverment posts just like the Thai Taksin Govement brother's sisters keep the power in the familiy

I also agree with D 2 the USA are backing the rebels

Why didn't the White House add "just like we planned it when we funded, equipped and organized the rebels." It's naive to think this movement or any others in the Middle East started without outside assistance.
