LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England : Thongchai Jaidee shot himself out of contention at the British Open on Saturday, with an horrendous third round of 74, four over par.

As he finished, the leader Brandt Snedeker was at 10-under par.The pride of Lop Buri, who started the day at even par after good first and second rounds, was erratic beyond description in Round Three.On a day the ex-paratrooper shot three birdies at the par-4 fourth, tenth and 17th holes, Thongchai had a double bogey and five bogeys on the English course.Thongchai's problem was much less with the golf course than with a recurring neck injury. The pain on Saturday got so bad he required physiotherapy."The problem was because the neck is very painful," Thongchai said. "Last night, I slept too much and when I woke up, I couldn't turn.     I would call his round disappointing, not 'horrendous.' Geez, it's a 74, for crissake.

    "Horrible, bad day" is an extreme over-reaction. Thongchai is not even ranked in the top 100 golfers, but currently lies 54th in the Open; a creditable performance on a day when 20 of the 83 players left after the cut equalled or exceeded his third round score of 4 over. If he stays neear his current position it will be a lot more than there is any reason to expect.
