108 killed in Iraq's deadliest day

A wave of attacks across Iraq on Monday killed 108 people in the country's deadliest day in more than two years after Al-Qaeda warned it would mount new attacks and sought to retake territory.

Officials said at least 228 people were wounded in 27 different attacks launched in 18 cities, shattering a relative calm which had held in the lead-up to the start on Saturday of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

In Monday's deadliest attack _ a string of roadside bombs and a car bomb followed by a suicide attack targeting emergency responders in the town of Taji _ at least 42 people were killed and 40 wounded, according to two medical officials.

As an American i can tell you (many Americans wont accept this) that is was an obsession with Bush to get rid of Saddam at any expense from the day he took office. The war there was a total ---- --. Waste of lives and money. AND he destroyed a buffer zone with Iran, Now Iran and Iraq are buddy buddies, Ha, just want we want. Crazy

Sadam Hussain was a monster. He used his own citizens to test chemical weapons on. He ruled through fear and was merciless. Iraq may have seemed a better place then but it's not true. The problem now is, as usual, political fighting (sounds familiar!) and Islamic fundamentalism and the extremists understanding of it. I, for one, am thankful that I live in an age when some countries of the world agree to step in and send a resounding message that you cannot act with impunity.

@ Discussion 1 Iraq was a relatively safe and stable nation before the Americans meddled with it under the discredited pretense of fighting terrorism so these continuing deaths are more blood on their hands. Linking Saddam to Bin Laden in the same sentence is a typical Fox News tactic to distort the truth, it's already been conceded that Saddam had nothing to do with the terrorist attacks on the USA.

The Iraqis and Afghans felt safe with the macho U.S and allied forces protecting them. Now the scene has changed, the objective of the U.S was to get Bin Laden and get Saddam - those two men are dead and gone. The U.S and allies will leave the Afghans and Iraqi's to defend themselves. The scenario remains unchanged from before the U.S involvement. This was NOT a solution for the local people, it is sad that so many have to die now. There is absolutely no interest in Iraq and Afghanistan now, the countries will slide back into chaos. This time there will be nothing to bring back the Americans, the locals will be sad, bullied and tormented. .... When will the world learn? Nothing comes for free. No one helps for free.
