Priewpan: I didn't meet Thaksin

National police chief Priewpan Damapong on Friday denied having met with ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in Hong Kong earlier this week to wish him happy birthday.

Pol Gen Priewpan admitted he had gone to Hong Kong but said he did not meet Mr Thaksin, his former brother-in-law who turned 63 on Thursday, or send him any birthday wishes. Photo by Surapol Promsaka na Sakolnakorn He claimed he had gone to Hong Kong to handle some "bureaucratic affairs" and did not talk to the fugitive ex-premier at all.Reports said that Pol Gen Priewpan left for Hong Kong from Suvarnabhumi airport on Tuesday morning to extend his birthday wishes to Thaksin. He reportedly took leave from duty on Tuesday to make the trip.Pol Gen Priewpan told reporters at the time that he had only accepted Thaksin's invitation and they had no special issues to discuss. The move prompted anti-Thaksin critics to say that he would either...

If Priewpan did meet with Thaksin in Hong Kong then there should be some evidence. A photo, a reliable eye witness, donut crumbs on Priewpan's uniform... Anything? Can anyone provide a shred of evidence? Of course who needs actual evidence in Thailand when only a smear will suffice.

Sorry, I actually believe in this "innocent until proven guilty" rule.

This denial by Pol Gen Priewpan is too late and does not match with Khun Chalerm who implicitly acknowledged there had been a meeting as he was 'going to ask what was discussed'. When you are in a hole stop digging. BTW Regards the final sentence, if Khun Thaksin really did not like him I doubt he would be National Police Chief or on the Board to Thai Airways etc. He still is a good bet for a Cabinet post next time round

He took leave to handle some "bureaucratic affairs"?!

Nobody on earth will believe this many any longer, so he can't stay on. Show some dignity, some respect, refuse the inactive post and resign with retrospective effect. I think we all have had enough of this circus.

Am somewhat surprised that the reporters didn't ask Pol Gen Priewpan what the "bureaucratic affairs" he claimed brought him to Hong Kong was all about, and why he had to go himself and take a leave of absence. Was he opening a new bank account? shopping around for a new condo? A lot needs explaining here because Priewpan is a public servant.

I once saw a policeman trying to settle a dispute between two parties. The two parties were so contradicting, my feelings were with the policeman who desperately tried to nail down what really happened. But what are we gonna do when the national police chief himself can't get his own story straight?

Didn't Chalerm say he will ask him what he discussed with Thaksin. Chalerm is really a big help isn't he?

Settle down everybody. Until someone comes forward with a photo taken of that police chief and Thaksin toasting each other with bubbly at that Hong Kong hotel not a thing will happen to Priewpan. He'll continue to deny and deny. Besides, if this government is comfortable with having red shirt terrorists in the cabinet, why should they be bothered with a lying unethical police chief? He'll retire in 5 weeks and will probably join the family business by getting a cabinet posting.
