The ICT ministry has, since long, a reputation for hindering, preventing information and I have no reason to believe a word of what they utter.

A very misleading statement and headline:
ICT: WIFI internet nationwide in 5 years

Information and Communication Technology Minister Anudit Nakornthap said on Saturday that the WIFI internet system will be made available in "key areas" nationwide within the next five years.

Certainly a huge difference when it is defined as "key areas", whatever that means. Probably means just small areas of a few cities. I seriously doubt it will be even close to nationwide unless a few small "key areas" in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Udorn and Phuket would be "nationwide".

No,WIFI will not be widely available in 5 years. In 5 years the budget will have disappeared and the WIFI plan totally forgotten about. The only thing this govt is good at is creating budgets, spending the money and having zero results. Spend some of the money on your Thai Olympic athletes. Maybe then in 4 years the country won't be such a huge international sports embarassment.

For free? I'll believe it when I see it. Years ago a foreign company offered to provide free internet access in Thailand. The offer was refused, since it would cut into the existing companies' income. I expect the same here.
