Ban deplores Syria 'proxy war'

UN chief Ban Ki-moon warned world powers they must overcome their rivalries to put an end to the "proxy war" in Syria, as deadly fighting raged in Damascus and the country's second city Aleppo.

Syrian rebels take up positions in the northern city of Aleppo on Friday.

Shells rained down on rebel positions in Aleppo as fighting was reported in Syria's commercial capital and in Damascus, with the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reporting at least 70 people killed across the country.

While it is true there is not enough being done to elevate the plight of the common people in Syria, and the UN does have a certain function and stands as a reminder to nations to seek international consensus and acceptance, there are some problems.

The UN has, over the years become pretty much a mouthpiece for the USA. It accept vetoes from the major powers and, again, in particular the USA and is in fact powerless to change anything as a consequence.

Its stance also on general supports US aggression and interference while condemning countries which do not go along with the rules dictated by the US regarding what is acceptable behavior.

I would like to ask what the UN has done for the oppressed people of all those Arab nations allied with the US and who oppress, imprison and kill there own people. Nothing. As long as the US and its corporations benefit financially and militarily the UN looks the other way.
