Pattani ambush kills policeman

A 57-year-old police officer was shot dead in an ambush by suspected militants in Pattani’s Sai Buri district on Saturday, said Pol Sub Lt Kachapat Wattanaudom, duty officer at Sai Buri police station.

Pol Sub Lt Kasem Churaungsook was travelling on his motorcycle on the Sai Buri-Panare Road in moo 2 in tambon Pasae Yawar shortly after noon when an unknown number of gunmen hiding in the roadside forest opend fire on him with war weapons.

The victim was shot several times in his torso and died at the scene. The assailants then fled, Pol Sub Lt Kachapat said.

You never see a rally or protest to end the violent conflict in the south. Normally, the government would be grilled by the press on a daily basis, but this is Thailand.

This conflict reminds me of the Malayan Emergency of the 1950s and the method of operations by the RKK is strikingly similar to Malayan Communist activities of the 1950s-1970s. What the British did then was immensely successful - "New Villages", but in this day and age may be seen as genocidal and racist. A similar policy is ongoing in Northern Sri Lanka today - to starve out the insurgents. It will take a lot of political will and courage to end this violence, but I suspect the IOC and Amnesty International will go berserk if the deep south re-organised vis-à-vis the Malayan Emergency.
