Sondhi gets 2 years in jail

Sondhi Limthongkul, founder of Manager newspaper and core member of the People's Alliance for Democracy, has been sentenced by the Rayong Court to two years imprisonment and fined 200,000 baht for defaming Gen Mongkol Ampornpisit, a former supreme commander.

In the lawsuit filed by Gen Mongkol on Aug 21, 2007, Sondhi was accused of defaming him in comments made on his television programme "Yam Fao Paen Din" broadcast on ASTV.

The court found him guilty as charged and sentenced him to two years in jail and a 200,000 baht fine.

The Thai judicial system is different. In America and many western countries civil and criminal law are separated but not in Thailand.

How come he has not being tried for the airport invasion.
Is it because there are others who support him behind the scenes. Why did the Democrats not take the airport invasion leaders to court and have them arrested including this gentleman here, where was AV on this ?
was damage not caused not just internally but worldwide as well ? could it be their shirt color meant AV kept silent all this time until the government changed for the better !

It is sufficient that the public knows only that the general was defamed and not know exactly what the defamation was? Well, Mr S, there is always self-imposed exile if you have enough money.

    D14. Wrong

You not heard of double standards?

D8. If Sondhi really had a powerful invisible hand behind to back him up. He would have crushed the red movement years ago.

D9 Android - Jatuporn got locked up for charges of relating to rioting and insurrection, not for defamation ... big difference in the seriousness between the two crimes.

Nobody really wants that Sondhi goes to jail. For the yellow supporters and Thaksin haters it’s easy: Sondhi helped to oust Thaksin and many people think he should get a medal for that and no jail.
But the reds also don’t really want him in jail. Just assume for a moment Sondhi would actually go to jail. What would happen next? One terrorist goes to jail, so other terrorists have to go to jail, correct? So if Sondhi would go to jail then consequently Jatuporn, Nattawut and all the other red-shirt leaders should also go to jail, correct?
Do the red-shirts want that their leaders go to jail? No. What is their excuse now: Sondhi and the other yellow-shirts are out on bail so Jatuporn & Co can’t go to jail.
Consequence: nobody wants to see Sondhi in jail. qed

Suspended sentences seem to be based now on the color of the political group you support.

D9, my dear android superman: what exactly did Jatuporn go to jail for? Defamation? I don't think so. Try to compare apples to apples.

Surely another Thai elite (by the way ex best freind of Thaksin before money dissagreements between corrupt business partners broke tehm up), which Thailand could do without easely and much better.

I don't recall people in the west being sentenced to prison for defamation of character. They may be fined and ordered to pay damages, but they don't get locked up in the monkey house.
