South 'may be lost if UN intervenes'

Thailand might lose the deep South if the United Nations intervenes to suppress the violence in the region, deputy army chief Daopong Rattanasuban said on Friday.

"We have not lost our land yet, but if we're complacent and let the UN intervene and hold a referendum, then we're finished," Gen Daopong said.

"We won't let this happen and we'll fight it to the death, but our Muslim brothers and sisters have to understand us because we're fighting against a small percentage of people who are using guerrilla warfare tactics."

This government has failed to reduce the violence in the deep South. The PM even refuses to visit there. If that is not prejudice I don't know what is. Thaksin's policies had, and still has lots to do with the violence. The Dems managed to reduce the violence, but this government changed all programs that had been started, and was working at reducing the violence. It is like they did not want the programs to work, with no interest in how many more people they would kill by ending all progress, whether they were working or not.

This government has failed in the deep South. It is now time for outside help to do what this government is incapable of accomplishing. Their very statements say they have no concern about how many more people are murdered, as long as they don't loose "face" by actually needing outside help.

This land was taken some 300+ years ago by Thailand. It just might be time to give it back if the current government can not stop the needless murders. One would almost think they want innocent people to continue being killed by their actions, and statements.

Dem & Pad (and the army) would do everything they can to keep deep south as a part of Thailand. Deep south is part of their voting base.
UDD and PT might try to let deep south go away from Thailand since they will never win votes in deep south.

The anonymous reporter writing this has not done the General any favours. One has to question the General's suitability for his position if he fails to understand the limitations of actions of the United Nations.
