The new chief will take office on Oct 1, a Prime Minister's Office announcement said.

Pol Gen Adul is currently a deputy national police chief overseeing RTP security affairs, and also the secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board. He is due to retire in two years.

He said he had just returned from inspecting security work in the southern border provinces when he learned about the royal endorsement.
