Phuket residents oppose Tesco Lotus

Angry Phuket residents held a rally Thursday to protest the proposed construction of a Tesco Lotus superstore in the tourist island's city area.

About 100 protesters made up of local people and members of private agencies including the Fresh Market club, the Agricultural Market Club, the Phuket Entrepreneurs Club and Phuket Merchants gathered in front of Phuket Provincial Hall in the afternoon after they marched around town with a pickup truck bearing banners opposing the construction of the new Tesco Lotus on Bangkok Road in the municipality.

It would affect mom and pop shops but there is a reason why .Tesco offers more selection and its prices are cheaper .Phuket needs mass transit .

I was only a few times in Phuket but I thought the prices were way higher than anywhere else in Thailand. Maybe Tesco can change that a little. I have no problem with small shops and I buy there if it is more convenient even if it is a little more expensive - but only a little more and not a lot more expensive.

Misleading title for this article. It's not the residents that oppose a Tesco, it's the local vendors.

If the market can offer better prices and fresher food than Tesco, I'm sure many locals will keep going there. If not, well, there free market competition for you.

Too bad there are no Walmarts in Thailand, if there were Tesco would be gone in about a month. Many small stores in Thailand actually have higher quality merchandise at lower prices than Tesco even if the surroundings are not as clean or bright.

Only 100? That's not worth reporting! Tesco will bring high quality as well as diverse foods and products. The only reason why these protesters are there is because they might have to actually compete and provide a better product to Tesco!

No real or viable reason given for this protest which says a lot about it!

Yes, it will improve the lives of Phuket urbanites who will have the opportunity to shop in clean, bright surroundings. let the market decide; if people don't want it, they won't shop there. However, if it opens, you'll probably see the local vendors stocking up there, like they do in many other modern trade stores.
