Sukhumbhand to seek re-election

MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra has confirmed his intention of seeking re-election as Bangkok governor for a second term under the Democrat Party banner.

He said this on Sunday at a media seminar at a resort in Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima province.

MR Sukhumbhand said if he was re-elected, he would push for the opening of a halal food centre to draw Muslim tourists from Middle East countries. He said he was inspired by his success in opening a halal kitchen project at Nong Chok Hospital.

spiceman 20 - There has been zero escalation in southern Thailand violence. Look it up.

englishbob 18 - Bangkok only represents ~20% of Thailands GDP. This is because manufacturing has moved to more northern provinces in the industrial estates (like the ones flooded to save Bangkok).

Discussion 18 englishbob : close all the water sluice gates at outskirts of bangkok, let the flood water accumulates in the outskirt industrial estate area, sacrifice the major industries including car manufacturing, and then bangkok the elite city is saved. Vote for Sukhumhand if you think fit!

Each province and region, including the Deep South, ought to be able to elect its own mayor and governor, just like BKK and Pattaya. Want Democracy? This is it!

Khun Android #10, I didn't know that water in Thailand flows upstream from south to north!

Khun Wantmyoy #5, so if we apply your Singaporean standard, what should we do with the current Thai Govt, which caused last year's history flooding catastrophe, this year's rising inflation, sharp escalating violence in the Deep South and an imminent dethroning of Thailand as the world's #1 rice exporter?

He fought for Bangkok during the flood . He isn't PT .That gets my vote . Greening up Bangkok would be nice .maybe plant some trees not under electricity wires .Turn the tobacco monopoly grounds into a park .Build some more train lines .

Android and Bluebottle - You SERIOUSLY want to bring up the floods?
Sukhumbhand fought off the idiots who said 'Flood the capital city.'
The less populated, less expensive areas which were ALREADY flooded were sacrificed to protect the hugely populated capital city full of historic buildings.

This argument that somehow flooding Bangkok is 'fair' is ridiculous. 40% of the country's GDP comes from Bangkok. 20% of its population live here. And the worst hit places would be the canal, river and port communities which are almost all poor.

It is not so long ago that PT wanted to take away Bangkok's right to elect its governor and appoint one instead. It is the only way PT will ever get a governor here.
