HK rally against patriotism class

Thousands of protesters held a rally in Hong Kong Saturday in a final push to force the government to scrap Chinese patriotism lessons before the start of a new school year.

Some 40,000 parents and students gathered outside the government headquarters despite rain, public broadcaster RTHK quoted organisers as saying. However, police put the figure at only 8,100.

It was the second mass demonstration in two months after up to 90,000 people took to the streets in July to oppose the lessons, which they say is a bid to brainwash children with Chinese propaganda in semi-autonomous Hong Kong.

Maybe China should look at why they need to make people take these classes .Instead of brainwashing your countrymen with propaganda why not admit all the skeletons in your closet and say your sorry and open up countries like Tibet and allow China to be appreciated in stead of hidden away .

I think every country in the world needs to scrap its indoctrination through early education of patriotism which becomes obsession and nationalist fervor often developing into oppression of dissent.

In the beginning people fought over water holes and berry patches. As mankind developed the tendency to see outsiders as threats transformed into nationalism and xenophobia. Modern day boundaries are much like water holes only bigger and what is protected rarely as essential as water.

But people, real people, normal common folk often intuit they and their like on the other side of a border are really very much alike. When called to fight each other, it is rarely for the benefit of the common people. Knowing this, the state resorts to early educational indoctrination to create ideas and feelings that in fact, are just conjured up for the purpose of control.
