Rubber, coconut farmers protest (pix)

BANGKOK - Hundreds of rubber and coconut farmers from the South staged a rally in front of Government House on Tuesday morning, demanding the government bring an end to the slide in rubber and coconut prices.

Reports said rubber growers wanted the government to fix the price of rubber, without grading it by quality, at 120 baht per kilogramme. They also called on the government to evenly spread its rubber-buying points to different areas.

The reports said the coconut farmers demanded the government stop importing coconuts and set prices at 12 baht each for fresh coconuts and 21 baht a kilogramme for dry coconut.

I agree with the comment re price fixing. But the government could act on the cartels within Thailand that manipulate the low price to the farmers at "auctions". But then, they may be one and the same.
