dom - "I agree with you that it is foolish to attempt to write history the day after it happens, pity you spoilt your point my immediately falling into the same trap. To claim at this stage that PT has failed is as stupid as to claim they have succeeded."

No trap at all. There's a LONG history of failure by TRT/PTP led governments in the South, several years, and NO history whatsoever of success.

Any negotiations to end an insurgency will be long and painstaking and will involve many people of different levels of relevance and many trips down blind alleys, the secret is single minded perseverance and political stamina.

It makes me feel physically sick when I read the everyday news about this rampant killing in the Southern region.
It makes me angry that no-one is making serious effort to stop this.
Not the Government. Not the Army. Not the Police.
Sure they talk and talk and have meetings to make us think they are making progress.
But it is all a big public relations exercise because they are out of their depth.
They don't have the balls to own up and admit they do not know what to do.
The Authorities report that they know who is behind these killings.
OK, so then, round them up, shoot them up, lock them up and throw away the key.
    Do something.
    Talk is cheap.
    People's lives are not.

There is a big difference in being a Muslim and being Islamist. I can live side by side with a Muslim but I would never turn my back on an Islamist. If there was a problem with my Muslim neighbor he would confront me. If there was a problem with my Islamist neighbor he would strap a bomb to himself sneak up behind me and detonate killing us both, in the name of a deity that does not exist fully expecting he will be rewarded as a marter. Some people are truly sick. Give the border provinces back to Malaysia where they belong, but not until a giant security (read; prison) wall is put up at the new border.

In the last few days, PTP was virtually declaring victory in the South. Red shirt apologists came out in mass for the first time on these threads crowing about how great PTP was doing suddenly.
    What happened?
This continues to be a sad chapter in Thai history and utter failure on PTP's part.
