Nitirat backs '32 democracy philosophy

Thailand needs a re-incarnation of the 1932 democracy philosophy in drafting a new charter to return sovereign power to the people and add punitive measures against those who attempt to tear down the constitution, according to a Thammasat University seminar.
Kasian Tejapira, Thammasat University's associate professor on political science, in his opening speech on Sunday on "Lawyers and the Coup" said the monarchy has become the core of whatever form of administration rules Thailand.
Coups, which are a sickness in any democracy, have been endorsed in Thailand as long as they uphold the monarchical institution, Mr Kasian said.
