First-car tax rebates start Friday

The first tax rebates under the government's first-car buyers' incentive programme will be paid on Friday.

Deputy Finance Minister Viroon Tejapaibul on Monday announced that the first 47 qualified applicants would receive tax rebates worth 3.5 million baht. He said the Excise Department and the Office of the Comptroller-General were in charge of processing the rebates. Under the programme that the Pheu Thai government introduced last year, first-time buyers of new cars are eligible to claim tax rebates of up to 100,000 baht.Mr Viroon said that because last year's floods disrupted car production, the government would extend the eligibility period for the programme.     Look at this situation on another angle; all these new car owners will be experiencing, first hand, whether this government policy will benefit or otherwise cause massive headaches in the long run. Can a small tax rebate far outweigh the heavy traffic congestion, high petrol/CNG, insurance policy, parking fees and maintenance costs? The time of realization is coming soon.

    Encouraging people to buy cars and go into debt with so much traffic is ridiculous. Bangkok needs more cars like a hole in the head and no I don't drive a car . When will the leadership with vision give us public transportation in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand .

    I really what the number of new car owners would be had the scheme not been announced. How many more people were attracted based in this generous plan? Just wonder if this plan is worth anything, not to mention the loss of billions of baht for..well..nothing other than vote-buying!!
