Military offers to help store rice

Military warehouses in Don Muang area can be used for rice storage if necessary, Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat said on Thursday.

ACM Sukumpol said this while voicing staunch support for the government's decision to continue with the rice price fixing scheme, which has drawn criticism and opposition from many sides, including academics.
.
He said that if there is a problem with a lack of warehouses to store the rice stockpile, the military would make available warehouses which are currently not being used.

During the floods last year military warehouses in Don Muang area were used to store flood relief supplies.  These warehouses were found to have some leaks.  After repairs, they could be used to store rice, ACM Sukumpol said.

I do not understand. The government just stated that they have sold the stored rice, now they need more space to store new rice????? Does the left hand know what the right hand is doing? Maybe too many hands under the table.

ACM Sukumpol: 'Don't worry. Nobody would be foolish enough to cause the country to collapse'.

Err, exports are well down; that there is a need for so much extra storage suggests Thai rice is over priced and not selling. Hence the lack of transparency by the government.

'If we can collaborate with Vietnam, we would be able to fix the price of rice ourselves'. Complete nonsense.

I do wish these people would stop saying the government have suffered losses. Some the simple farmers may see it like that but it is us the taxpayer who have suffered losses.

No, that is the way it should be done, rice scheme is fine but it should be a temporary solution, I want to see the Government improve the infrastructure in Thailand and bring education facilities and industry to these areas as well so that the people there have a real choice between farming and other works. The centralization of everything in Bangkok and it's proximity must end, rest of country must be developed as well asap.
The infrastructure must be improved now, it will drive the rest...

Thailand has so much rice in storage they are running out of places to keep it, that's the message most intelligent people in the industry will read from this headline. No rice buyer in his or her right mind would touch this stuff because of its age and the fact it was produced under a program that stressed quantity and not quality, nor would they pay full price for something for which there is an over supply. That would be like paying over sticker price for a car that's been sitting on a dealers lot for 2 years. Anyone with a good Western education would see this situation as a disaster in the making without even knowing the specifics of Thai politics.
