South African mine sacks 12,000

Mining powerhouse Anglo American said Friday it had sacked 12,000 workers who went on strike at a South African platinum mine amid labour unrest that has killed at least six people in the past week.

The firm said the miners had failed to appear before disciplinary hearings "and have therefore been dismissed in their absence."

    Any government that would allow a foreign corporation to fire 12,000 of its citizens over a strike must be incredibly corrupt.

    It is not the board that should appear before a disciplinary board.

    The sacking of 12,000 id clearly a confrontational act and the potential for ensuing violence is awesome. Let us hope they fond a solution that avoid the worst.
