Abhisit: Rice scheme needs fixing

The government should review its rice price pledging programme to ensure tranparency, Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Saturday.

The government must accept the fact that the rice pledging scheme has created problems for rice farmers. In addition, it has opened opportunities for corruption, said the opposition leader.

The Pheu Thai government has become the country's sole rice buyer, paying prices at least 40% above market rates to farmers.

Disc 18 - You should read this article from today.

In it 70% of the population doesn't agree with you, the Democrats or Abhisit.

Disc 18 - Do you have a link to or more information on the Blind test, as I've never heard of it.

Farmers traditionally don't trust the Democrats, from long before there was even a TRT. The Democrats did nothing for them but they see the PTP as doing something, be it only a little.

Disc11 Ricefield - Actually in a blind test, when both schemes were explained to rice farmers, the Dem policy was preferred.

However, once the 'Peua Thai brand' was revealed, the farmers chose that policy. Which goes to show that Peua Thai is a successful marketing machine. If they can brand Yingluck as a Prime Minister and Thaksin as a victim to the rank and file Thais, they can get away with anything.

@ Disc 10. 'TS is a clever man'. NO ! Thaksin is an evil, corrupt opportunist who thinks he is clever. He believes (as told by a fortune teller) that he will be ruler of Thailand. I doubt it.

'Abhisit: Rice scheme needs fixing'. That is so AV like polite. Fixing ? It needs a deep cleaning.

Rather like his handling of the armed mob in 2010 : too soft.

The PTP scheme isn't good, but the farmers like it, then neither was the Democrat one, and the farmers didn't like it at all. No mater what scheme has been used, historically, some liked it and some did not. It's a political hot potato. On one hand the government, whomever it is at the time, has to protect agriculture and on the other they will likely end up losing money. It's a trade off.

The rice scheme is not the only agricultural subsidy scheme BTW. There are ones for rubber, cassava, corn, sugar cane, palm oil etc. The sugar and cane subsidy alone under the Democrats accounted for about 12-16 billion baht per year. The Democrats have chosen to pick the rice subsidy likely because it would affect their voter base the least and the PTP voter base the most if it was changed. It's not about good or bad, it's about politics.
