Woman killed on pedestrian crossing

BANGKOK - A 70-year-old woman was killed when a public bus hit her then overturned and fell on her on Monday outside Thewes fresh market, police said.

Pol Col Paitoon Chata-ngam, superintendent of Samsen police station, said the woman was identified as Charoensri Vanichanan.

He said the air-conditioned public bus, running on route 524 between Bang Khen and Sanam Luang, hit Charoensri as she was walking across the road on a pedestrian crosswalk.

Crossing the streets in Bangkok is a gamble even at pedestrian crosswalks. As the traffic light goes red, 5-10 vehicles are still allowed to go through. Cars, buses, trucks and motorcycle drivers have very little regard for traffic rules and simple courtesy towards people on foot.
The traffic police isn't doing much to change this type of selfish driving habit.
Normal pedestrians are not given enough time to cross the streets at intersections.
Senior citizens can only hope that they get lucky.

Pol Col Paitoon said the bus tried to stop but failed because the road was slippery due to heavy rain.

Or rather...the bus tried to stop but failed because it was speeding AND the road was slippery due to heavy rain.
