Court rejects challenge to rice scheme

The Constitution Court on Wednesday rejected a challenge to the government's rice pledging scheme, saying the petition is outside its field of jursdiction.

Moreover, the petitioners were not the party whose rights and liberties had allegedly been violated by the scheme, the court ruled.

Court spokesman Pimol Thampithakpong said the ruling was unanimous, with a vote of 9-0.

englishbob (D5): You are of course entitled to your opinion, but the Stock Exchange of Thailand has this year been one of the best performing in the world, inward investment applications are up, and recent Abac and Suan Dusit polls indicate that a majority of people are generally satisfied with the Government's peformance.

In addition, the Swiss international investor Marc Faber, now based in Thailand, recently indicated his confidence in the country's future economic prospects, whilst noting the downside risks, such as cronyism, corruption and political instability.

Thailand isn't perfect, but let's keep things in perspective. And Burma, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam have their own problems.

Whatever, the scheme is so corrupt, it's time social media exposes the corruption. The courts are now afraid to deal with anything now. The Red Shirts have pushed their influence through intimidation.
In this day and age with the internet, won't be too long where they're all humiliated.

"the petitioners were not the party whose rights and liberties had allegedly been violated by the scheme," As taxpayers they are violated like all of us.

Since when has it be a requirement that only the victim can petition the court. Is this the first time in Thai judicial history that a court has voted 9.0 on anything.

To add further insult to this farcical situation YS then gives a virtual middle finger salutation to those who dare to complain by assigning Chalerm to investigate after he solves the Southern unrest.

I feel sorry for this country. IMO in ten years time this once proud Asian tiger will be reduced to the status of a mangy alley cat ranking behind Vietnam , Malaysia and Indonesia and Myanmar in every metric.

I hope the government do not get carried away with this verdict. The critics have identified the corruption aspects of the scheme and the enforcement agencies must double their work to go after these offenders whoever they are. The scheme has good intentions for the poor farmers to have a chance to get off debts and have a better life. It's important that farming remains rewarding to enable farmers to continue toil their fields and younger people have the incentives to choose farming as their careers.

Interestingly the court said nothing about the scheme itself but used the excuse that they had not the power. The headline is very misleading.

Its is truly sad that the hard working taxpayer has to pay for this scam while the people on the receiving end who make up the majority pay none .I wonder how long this dysfunctional cycle will last .Maybe when we have to phone the IMF again ? I dont think the farmers really care .They didnt have much to begin with.

"Earlier today, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said she would order the Commerce Ministry to hold a press conference to give details..."

Why not since the beginning? Is it really necessary that this government gets threatened with dissolution of the PT party or being taken to court before they agree to clean up their ranks and give information to the public?
