New idea to end Bangkok traffic jams

A government transport agency has proposed that traffic congestion in Bangkok could be eased by changing people's working hours.

"Traffic in Bangkok is moving at slower average speeds, around 18 to 19 kph in the morning and 24 to 23kph in the evening," Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning chief Chula Sukmanop said on Wednesday.

Dis 2 – you are correct when you say public transport needs to be developed at a much faster pace to accommodate more people. Now lets imagine how much further along this process would be if it were not for the coup that ousted Thaksin and his government? I remember the Onut BTS extension construction being completed for well over a year before it actually opened for service. No emphasis on this while the Dems were in control until it was election time. Now we once again have a government that will push to develop suitable public transport for BKK.

I can solve Bangkok traffic problem .Build trains and subways .Refprm education so parents dont have to drive kids all over town to find a decent school .If the local school wasnt so bad they would have to .

Face it Thai drivers have no discipline, the government is too lazy to fix it, the police (and government) are too corrupt to fix it and the Thai's believe they are great behind the wheel. If this was a real developed country the people would be allowed to have traffic intersections where turns could be made based on the color of lights and arrows. This will never happen in this country where instead of having real traffic enforcement and laws they put speed bumps every 30 meters on a soi where you would be shocked to see a vehicle pass at more than 30 kpm. This is Thailand, home of no schooling, laws, enforcement or (worst of all) concern.

A "new idea" that has been used in other countries for decade ...

Traffic is a mess 18 hours a day. It's obvious most of these people aren't working. 90% of the cars have only one driver or a driver and HiSo rear seat passenger. Maybe if we tried to keep buses in the left lane where they belong instead of allowing them to stop when and where they feel like might help. How about an IT infrastructure that allows people to work at home on clerical tasks rather than commuting every day. Try cutting the number of taxis by about 50% and forcing them to take direct routes instead of taking passengers on sightseeing tours to drive up the meter, if they bother to use it. Get rid of the TukTuk and Taxi scammers parked in front of every hotel and shopping mall waiting for that one pasenger who will happily pay triple to go to his cousin's jewelry shop. Amazing Thailand!!

Even if people worked in shifts around the clock, still there would be traffic jams.

Improve public transport ASAP, make car parks near train stations, reintroduce smart bus lanes, BAN cars from the city center's most congested areas, make more walking areas, experiment with cycling or motorbike lanes and tax motorists who still want to venture into the city.

Of course all of this will take time, but better late than never.

Actually @upena (D #1), flex time does not work in many cities already. The idea is used so extensively in Bangkok's sister city of Los Angeles that the only time when there ISN'T a traffic jam is from approximately 4:00 'til 7:00 AM on Sunday morning. At all other times, expect to sit in stop'and'go traffic.
Walking is a better way to get around in Bangkok (as long as you are spry enough to dodge the motorbikes)

This idea had been tried before a few years ago but was not so successful due to various reasons even though it was quite feasible. This time around I'd like to suggest that all government agencies should follow the commercial banks by continuing to work during lunch hour.

So, other agencies have tried the idea and it did not work well. So, let's try the same idea and hope it works well. Didn't someone once say that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?
