Chalerm won't strip Thaksin's rank

Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will not be stripped of his police lieutenant-colonel's rank, and instead should be made a police general, Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung said on Thursday.

Mr Chalerm, who is in charge of the Royal Thai Police Office (RTPO), said this when asked why he had not sought to strip Thaksin of his police rank, since Defence Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat has appointed a committee to consider divesting opposition leader and former prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva of his military rank.

Mr Chalerm, who was a police captain in the Crime Suppression Division before entering politics, said he would rather not comment on ACM Sukumpol's move because he did not know much about military affairs.

It doesn't make any difference if Thaksin is a Colonel or a General in the Thai Police, after all it is a largely criminal organization itself. One more criminal, amongst their upper ranks, won't make any difference. When they admitted Chalerm's son just recently that said it all.

A government defending a fugitive, amazing Thailand.

What rank? Thaksin resigned from the police. You do not keep your rank when you resign, only when you retire. Thaksin is an ex-Lt Col, just as Chalerm is an ex-Captain. Leave it Chalerm to suggest that a former officer should be promoted.

There you have it. This proves Thaksin isn't running the government. He's only just a "police general" which is much different from a "military general". The difference is that a "police general" has a rank which is actually below that of "Prime Minister".

Why not try Thaksin in absentia? He failed to show for the hearing, an arrest warrant is issued, no need to wait any longer. Try the case. And let the public see and hear the evidence.
