Iraq buys Thai rice

Iraq bought 100,000 metric tonnes of rice from Thailand, according to Iraq's Trade Ministry.

The purchase followed a tender for 30,000 tonnes of rice that closed on Oct 7, the ministry said in a statement.

Olam International will supply 70,000 tonnes of Thai rice, and Louis Dreyfus will supply the remaining 30,000 tonnes, it said.

100,000 will not make a very big hole in the millions we have in stock. Why even mention such a piddling amount.Yes I know to make it sound as if they are moving it to sound positive.

I have never understood how people can stuff themselves on rice, I get through 2 kilos a week feeding the local wild birds, but even they are getting a bit bored with it. :-)

What Thailand should do is to set up a rice cartel with Vietnam and India. thus controlling around 80% of the export rice, no need to give away a commodity like rice, same with rubber, hopefully Vietnam will join Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia in the newly formed rubber cartel , that would represent 80% of world production and be good to prevent give away this commodity as well. OPEC only controls a small amount of the oil output but have a great say on what the price should be for oil, hopefully the 2 above mentioned cartels will be able to do the same.

100k is smallfry and add to that,it was private business, not G-2-G. PTP/UDD and their supporters just suffered a major loss of face. Again.

Apparently 30 K is not from from Thailand : 'Iraqi Grain Board spokesman Amer Abdul-Aziz said Saif International will provide 30,000 tonnes of the rice from Uruguay'.

This was not a G-to-G sale. It was a private affair between Iraq and private interests in Thailand. Obviously this is not a secret affair as the Government's non existing deals with foreign countries.
