Govt warned to curb public debt

The government should be more aware of the impact of the continuing global economic recession and refrain from creating more public debt, a leading economist warned on Wednesday.

Speaking at a seminar, Thai Economy in the Mist of Changes to Face Challenge, Bandit Nitthavorn, managing director of the Thai Institute of Directors, said it would be more difficult for Thai exporters to access export markets.

The big economies worldwide had begun to implement trade barriers, he added.

"Mr Bandit believed the global economy would slowly improve next year, if China comes up with stimulus measures and the US is able to settle its fiscal problems and there are solutions to the euro debt crises in Greece and Spain."

That is a whole lot of "ifs".

Well 2 economists at least 2 different opinions....the thing to do when export at some stage does not perform well enough is to bolster domestic consumption and do investments in infrastructure that can raise the competitiveness of the country...Thailand's debt is not critical by any means and it's banks are in good shape and there is hardly any unemployment on the contrary millions of foreigners work in Thailand.....that Marc Faber chooses to live her, invest in property here and says that Thai Banks are in much better shape than it's international peers is just underlining that fact.

The government won't listen. It's perfectly happy running the country into the ground, whilst getting rich in the process.
