SRT to halt unprofitable services

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT)is planning to terminate six unprofitable services to plug annual losses of 136 million baht.

SRT deputy governor Viroj Triampongpan, who is acting governor, said on Thursday the state railway would start cutting the unprofitable round trip services on Nov 1. This would save the SRT approximately 136 million baht per year in operating costs.

It would also improve other services as the locomotives and carriages would be redistributed to other money-making services, he said.

Perhaps better would be to address the reasons why rail is so little used in Thailand?

Chiang Mai Zoo is costing the country more than 100 million per year. Maybe they should start with that, one of Thaksins pet projects.

Did the SRT analyse why these 3 services were unprofitable? Rail services by their very nature, globally don't make money. Money is made by renting the vast plots of land that some how are owned by the SRT. Ancient and antiquated rolling stock, entrenched and corrupt government department.

I thought he did mean ‘stopping unprofessional services’
That would make more sense and would be more profitable as well....

136 million baht? That is laughable! It is pocket change in the scheme of things for a national railway. SRT Office heads must be throw backs to the days of steam locomotives.
