A Bangkok court on Monday ruled a former MP candidate for Si Sa Ket from the Matubhum Party was guilty of vote-buying in last year’s general election and banned him from running in elections for five years.
The case was filed with the Supreme Court's Election Cases Division by the Election Committee (EC).
In the petitioner’s statement, Mr Pittaya addressed voters at tambon Bok in Non Khun district in the lead up to the July 3 election. Ten minutes after he had taken to the stage, his seven campaign staff handed out the candidate’s pamphlets along with 200 baht each. Mr Pittaya was said to have told the audience in the Isan (Northeastern) dialect: “Brothers, I have hospitality to offer here. Anyone who hasn’t got it, don’t leave yet. Those already got it can leave”.
