Yingluck to meet Queen Elizabeth

Yingluck Shinawatra will be the first Thai government leader in decades to have an audience with the Queen of England when she makes an official visit to the UK next week.

Thailand's prime minister will visit the United Kingdom on Tuesday and Wednesday at the invitation of Prime Minister David Cameron, according to Ambassador Pasan Teparak.

During the two busy days, she will be granted an audience with Britain's 40th monarch. Ambassador Pasan said he could not recall who was the last premier from Thailand who had the rare opportunity.

pardon my ignorance but can someone please point out to me why this is a valid news story please. What exactly do people expect to be achieved by meeting the queen of england.
I am English by the way and know for a fact that on either a business level or a political level there is little to be gained by doing such a meeting on state visits. Its anyone's guess why Thaksin or abhisit didnt get an invite, but if people here think the queen gives a second care about Thailand's political strife my guess is they would be very much mistaken

Disc10 Surfer... "and this man was not a murder."
Thaksin ordered the war on drugs and killed 2500 people over 2 months. The global community condemned it. People pleaded with Thaksin to stop it - he refused. Many hundreds of drug users went into hiding and consequently HIV rates increased and more people died.
78 men were killed at Tak Bai - Thaksin said they died because they were 'weak from hunger from fasting for Ramadan'.

Security forces under Abhisit have been blamed for 22 deaths during exchanges of fire with armed men. Care to explain your point again?

I hope Yingluck has a translator with her, so the Queen can understand her fractured English.

There seems to be one common interest in all the PM’s trips oversees. On most occasions, she is accompanied by business leaders and Ministers related directly to economic development. She has the economic interest of Thailand at heart. As economic opportunities and conditions improve, this will also benefit the people in the South which in turn will put pressure on the insurgency.

D5 Eric - Don't start patting her on the back for a great job. The ONLY reason she gets an audience is because it is the 400th year anniversary of UK-Thai relations. If someone else had been PM, they would have gotten the invite. It is simply the luck of dates, not her "great" work.

"Out of sight out of mind"& "sweep dirt under the rug" are the ways to solve problem. that is why pm is out of the country counless time better than solve the problems at home.
