Prapat outlines plans for SRT

Improvements will be made to services operated by the State Railway of Thailand and measures will be introduced to solve the SRT's debt problem as soon as possible, newly appointed SRT governor Prapat Chongsanguan said on Tuesday.

Mr Prapat, whose appointment was endorsed by the cabinet yesterday, said in the next six months improvements will be made to railway station toilets and to provide convenience and security for passengers. The aim was to generate public confidence in the train services.

Train fares would not be increased until services have been improved.

Thailand is the land of slowness, inefficiency and no action for the future. The only thing slower than the stuck-in-the-mud 2G communications is the SRT. While high speed trains are in China, Singapore and Korea, Thailand is chuggin’ along in the days of old with no concrete starts to improve service; just talk, same as 3G. I can’t understand how Thailand will be able to fully participate in the ASEAN market when the infrastructure is so antiquated and the government has made minimal effort to prepare the people. Improving the toilets is his priority is it and that will improve confidence!It seems to me the whole system belongs in a museum.176 billion would not come close to making road crossings safe never mind improving the infrastructural.All I see is massive debt for the tax payers if the thing is to be made fit for the 21 st century.

Nothing about improving service I note. Recently my wife returned from Bangkok to Udon Thani, an eleven and a quarter hour train journey. Somehow SRT managed to arrive five and a half hours late!!

As you say D1 the Airport Link trains are at capacity.
However the Express Service is highly under used especially from Makasan. This is both due to the location of Makasan and the 40 minutes time between trains.

To my mind an obvious fix would be to allow the Express Service one stop at Makasan instead of running 2 separate non-stop services to the airport.

Almost every day I take the Airport Rail Link City line into the city. Every day I notice the almost empty (if not empty) Express trains going to and from the airport. And I see the City Line trains filled to capacity. Why don't they simply decrease the number of express trains, increase the number of City line trains, and add extra cars to the City line? While they are at it, why not add some decent parking at the Rail Link stations.
