Man beating wife ‘accepted’ in Thailand

A UN study has concluded that that it is acceptable in Thailand for a man to beat his wife, according to the Director of the Office of Women and Family, posttoday.com reported on Wednesday.

Thailand ranks second of the 49 countries studied on the topic of 'perceptions of domestic violence'. It said statistics show that 63% of people in Thailand think it's justifiable for a man to hit his wife.

The director says children in Thailand see violence all the time in today's media - in movies, television shows and games.

Anyways, about this article, I believe it’s wrong to hit a female. But, I also believe that people are equal and that everyone has the right to defend themselves. If a man hits a woman, if she can she should hit back and defend herself. Same goes the other way. If a woman hits a man, he too has the right to defend himself.

What I see is the other way around, the wife beating their man most of the time in Thailand for womanizing, being lazy, and a drunk.

63% think it's OK to beat their wives. Over 70% think graft and corruption are a part of daily life (survey reported in BP). What next? I know Thais are proud of the fact that Thailand was one of the few countries never to be colonised but maybe it would have done them some good.

First of all I also condemn men who beat women because they just feel like it. But I think it is unfair to condemn every man who ever beat a woman. Lots of woman in Thailand (and probably elsewhere) beat men, often their husband - is that ok? Is the man allowed to hit back if a woman hit him or wants to stab him with a knife, etc.?

I believe more in a UN study than what is said in Thailand. The PM who is a woman could may be tell us what she thinks and perhaps her own experience...

Its best to check the backgrounds of all the police officers at Krabi, who handle this case. There may be some surprises in hand.

This is irresponsible journalism from posttoday.com, these stats are misleading. Who did they survey, how many people did they survey, how old, from what parts of Thailand. Statistics by their very nature are simply numbers and doesn't necessarily capture attitudes effectively.
It's probably wrong to assume that nearly 2 thirds of people think domestic violence is acceptable. I'm pretty sure victims, their families & their children if any would object to it a great deal. I know this to true to a small degree as my current partner is a former victim.

& I'd have thought perpetrators would be more inclined to blame drugs / alcohol, not medi

I agree with Franklin. A female prime minister should have reacted instantaneously regarding this issue. One would have thought that she would have handled this situation before President Obama arrives on Sunday. Although Krabi might be a small and insignificant town in the world, I'm sure President Obama has been advised of this sensitive local incident.
