Singapore cabbie returns $1.1m to Thai couple

A Singaporean taxi driver has been heralded as a hero after he returned S$1.1 million (26 million baht) in cash to a vacationing Thai couple who had left the money in his cab.

Sia Ka Tian, 70, was shocked to find the money in a black paper bag on the back seat on Monday after he dropped the couple off at a shopping centre.

"When I saw the money, I thought, trouble is here. I was sure there was at least $200,000 in the bag,'' the Straits Times quoted the 31-year veteran in the taxi business as saying.

Now that Hong Kong has too high a profile as a place to "vacation" with large sums of unexplained money, perhaps they are just experimenting with another option. It seems that most are agreed that the "vacationing Thai couple" cover story lack any credibility whatsoever. One can think of very few legitimate reasons to deal in such large sums of cash these days, particularly internationally, unless there is something rather dubious occurring. Cookie boxes are getting too small, so now must use paper bags. They do need to find some more intelligent and responsible couriers for the money.

I assume Singapore police asked why they were carrying so much cash - and if they lied about it when entering the country. I have to believe more is coming to this story....

That's fishy. No one would walk about with so much money unless he has something to hide.

I don't like to blame on the people but in this case I suspect the money might be a dirty money since it's very unusaul for the travaller will carrying that much of money in cash.
