Woman killed by wild elephants

RAYONG – A woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant after the herd was startled by the sound of fireworks, reports said on Tuesday.

Panita Nichee, 31, suffered multiple broken bones and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The victim’s husband, Paiwal Sa-ngam, 33, said they were working at a rubber plantation in Khao Samao district, early Tuesday morning. He heard the sounds of elephants in the area, and upon turning around saw a herd of 20-30 moving in their direction.

Ploydonut, You are thinking elephants should be owned. The logging companies might have some but for tourist attraction only. Now Thailand doesn't have any trees left for logging the elephants end up for entertainment only.

I thought there are not many wild elephants in Thailand. 15 years ago I camped out Khoa Sok in Suratanee, there were signs elephant crossing all over the trail, never seen one only come across the huge amount of dropings, The guide made all the noises because he didn't know what todo if we faced the elephants so making noise to keep them at bay, I as tourist wanted to see wild things in the jungle never had a chance. Sad that there are many ignorant people still doing stupid things without knowing consequences.

Scaring a herd of wild elephants with fireworks sounds really stupid .What about relocating the herd or some kind of compromise .
