Wage hike may hit 2,193 SMEs

A total of 2,193 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are expected to be affected by the increase in the daily minimum wage to 300 baht, according to Labour Minister Padermchai Sasomsap.

The figure was based on a preliminary assessment made by officials about how businesses are preparing for the wage hike, which will take effect on Jan 1 in  70 provinces.

The minimum wage was already increased to 300 baht in April in the seven most highly developed provinces including Bangkok and Phuket.

If company is 'healthy' enough to pay, it might work. If company is somewhat struggeling already, lay-offs are inevitable, the company may even be closed. Trying to 'redistribute' the funds of others, is not always so easy and sometimes create more problems than it solves.

Khun Genii #4, what you've said is irrelevant. We are talking Economics here. And until enough people, especially, those in high offices finally get a hang of it, they will continue to end up hurting more than helping people, who need help the most.

So many complaining about the wage increase but no one complaining about the price of food. For those who can afford it try shopping for family food everyday on less than 300 baht per day wage. I assure you there's no one making less than 300BPD complaining.

Khun Pointoffew #1, how so? In Thailand, rising wages are always eaten up by inflation. Unless rising wages is a direct result of rising productivity, either by rising Demand or shift from farming or servicing economy to manufacturing one. Example, South Korea!

Admit it the have no idea how many people it will effect,It will not help the self employed.More to the point who is going to enforce the whole thing. They canto enforce a simple law such as wearing crash helmet never mind making more.

2,193 small and medium enterprises and 2,193 manufacturers is not the same, but the number of SMEs "affected" (they could actually benefit from the wage hike) must be closer to 25,000.
