World leaders shocked by US shooting

World leaders expressed shock and horror after a gunman massacred 20 small children and six teachers Friday in the US state of Connecticut, in one of the worst school shootings in history.

The Los Angeles Lakers and the crowd observe a moment of silence for victims of a mass school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, before the start of their game against the Washington Wizards on Friday evening.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon wrote to Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy to give his "deepest condolences at the shocking murders," a statement said.

It is right that the esteemed leaders throughout the world offer their heartfelt condolences, as do I.

Anybody with any sense of humanity and decency would do the same.

But not one mention of the acceptance within the culture of violence and the right to bear arms.

Come on U.S. (et al), if you really care for these innocent victims get real and do something about it.

Its heartwarming to see the care and feelings for those poor children. If only the same care was there for all children that are victimized by weapons in the world.

The 'collateral damage' to children by the USA in countries with which it has not been at war is also "heinous and unthinkable". Since 2004 over 200 children have been killed by missiles fired from US drones in Pakistan, the Yemen and Somalia. Even worse is the dreadful, continuing US legacy of the estimated unexploded 80 million cluster bomblets in Laos. Over 100 Laotians are still injured every year by these bomblets, around 60% of those injured die, and 40% are children. What happened in Connecticut was a shocking tragedy, but the hypocrisy of the Western world is more deeply disturbing.
