Myanmar okays private newspapers

YANGON: Myanmar will allow privately owned daily newspapers starting in April for the first time since 1964.

The Information Ministry announced on its website on Friday that any Myanmar national wishing to publish a daily newspaper would be able to submit an application in February. New papers will be allowed to begin printing on April 1 in any language, it said.

The move was an expected part of new media freedoms introduced in the former military dictatorship as part of reforms President Thein Sein has introduced since taking office last year.

Somehow it is hard to believe that the military leaders are ready to give up the control. But the sighs are good. Hopefully this progress will continue over the next years.
