Thailand among top retirement places

Thailand, praised for its "affordability, exotic locales and outdoor lifestyle," placed ninth on an annual list of best countries for North Americans to retire to.

Thailand and Malaysia were the only Asian countries to place in the Top 10 of the favoured retirement destinations. With its low cost of living, balmy climate and cheap property prices, Ecuador was ranked the top foreign retirement destination for North Americans for the fifth consecutive year. The South American nation bordered by Colombia and Peru scored the highest marks in InternationalLiving.com's annual ranking of the best places to retire. With monthly estimated living expenses ranging from $900 to $1,400, Ecuador surpassed Panama, Malaysia, Mexico and Costa Rica, which rounded out the top five countries."I think the combination of a welcoming culture, the great weather, the affordability and its proximity to the United States all go together to make it a good package," Dan Prescher, the special projects editor for the website, said on Thursday."Panama has a lot of the same things going for it, but it isn't quite as affordable as Ecuador," he added in an interview.Editors at InternationalLiving.com analyzed data and information from correspondents in the countries most popular with American and Canadian retirees to compile the results, which were based on a host of categories: cost of living, climate, property prices, healthcare, ease of integration, retirement infrastructure, entertainment and amenities and special benefits for retirees.A large part of Ecuador's appeal is how inexpensive it is for retirees. A beer costs just 85 cents. A doctor's visit is $25, roughly the same price as a one-hour massage."Seniors resident in Ecuador qualify for half-price entertainment and local...

    10 were unconscious

    8 had no opinion
    14 uttered unprintable words/phrases

Thailand is a wonderful and exotic place for a short term vacation. Its also a wonderful retirement destination for "well to do people" that do not have to worry about a budget. But make sure you stay in "falang friendly" Phuket, Pattaya or Changmai. In the hinterland they do not speak even basic english. Thailand is not for people with middle to low incomes. The days of Thailand as a cheap and affordable retirement destination are over.Despite the pitfalls, I thoroughly enjoy myself here.Like it or not we are all just walking atm's.

" personally i think the government should issue yearly or two yearly visas to those farangs married to thai citizens. as it is, every three months we have to travel a long distance to get our three monthly visa" - I've been married to a Thai for over 20 years and always got a one year visa. It is certainly worth having, because if your job falls through you don't lose your visa!

Agree with Sibley! Thailand could be a great place to retire if the government started to treat foreign retirees better. Take a look at some of the other countries in the top 10, such as Malaysia. They make life a lot easier and are a lot more welcoming than Thailand. They want people to settle in their countries. Thailand just wants your money, and you get no rights or privileges in return. Does anyone think things will ever change?

"It would be nice of the Thai's if they made is easier for people over 55 to retire in Thailand" What is difficult about it? I have numerous friends who retired here. They say they did not have to jump through hoops.

Thailand is balmy but also a bit barmy at times.

So, Thailand is in number 9 not in number 1,2 or 3. How many old people would like to live in another country when they retire.? Thailand don't have institutions for the aged people unlike in other counries. Who will take care of them if they come here? Maybe those who choose Thailand belongs to the other brackets of society who are still exploring....

i certainly agree with some of sibleys comments (discussion 1). personally i think the government should issue yearly or two yearly visas to those farangs married to thai citizens. as it is, every three months we have to travel a long distance to get our three monthly visa, for those farangs who arent that well off this is a financial burden.
i dont mind doing the three monthly visits to my immigration office but it would be nice if i feel that the government of thailand trusts me enough to be a good thai farang! god willing i will never leave thailand, in spite of the traffic cops, the corruption in certain quarters!

Thailand is specifically geared to foreign retirees. A young man needing a job and without a skill that Thailand lists as acceptable would not find Thailand appealing. North Americans, mainly English speakers may find much of Thailand outside of Phuket, Samui, Chiang Mai and Bangkok difficult due to this language problem.

Malaysia #3, Thailand #9, TOT and PT government take heed.
