Vietnam jails 13 activists

HANOI - Vietnam on Wednesday jailed 13 activists convicted of plotting to overthrow the communist regime, in a new crackdown criticised by the United States as part of a "disturbing" trend in the authoritarian state.

The accused - including Catholics, bloggers and students - were handed sentences ranging from three to 13 years, defence lawyer Ha Huy Son told AFP.

Another defendant received a three-year suspended sentence, which in Vietnam equates to house arrest. Many of the accused have been held in pre-trial detention for extended periods.

D2: do I understand you correctly? You consider the US as the frontrunners of human rights? Not sure whether that was meant sarcastically, I hope so. It took them over 200 years to get a black president, and that is not the end of all racial issues they still have, not to mention the historical records about it. I tend to agree with D1, swipe up your own door step before fingerpointing at others. Just heard some news yesterday about the conditions a wiki-leaks informant was held in US custody...

that is NOT the point, pointman.
It is about human rights, and ofcourse they, the frontrunners of human rights in the world, speak out by releasing "Press releases" already typed out 40 years ago.

While the US has a "hand" in the disappearence of almost all democraticly elected heads of state in Latin america , they are comitted to "this must never happen again"

So leave the US out of this OK?

    Now where were we?
    Human rights activists........ in Vietnam?

The United States, needs to forget about Vietnam, and work on its own internal problems. There's a lot of American children going to bed hungry while American politicans are constantly engaged in addressing the issues of foreign countries. It's time to rebuild the USA, educate its citizens and work on a 16 Trillion Dollar debt.
