Prayuth 'sorry', won't confront Sondhi

Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha has apologised for using strong words to describe the yellow-shirt People's Alliance for Democracy, but refused to respond to nasty criticism from PAD co-leader Sondhi Limthongkul.

Gen Prayuth said on Monday he was sorry he spoke harshly and inappropriately when he reacted to a broadcast on the pro-PAD ASTV-Manager TV channel about the Thai-Cambodian border dispute around Preah Vihear temple ruins.

He also said the soldiers who protested in front of the ASTV-Manager office on the weekend acted on their own and gathered in their off-duty time and did so because they wanted to protect the army's pride and their commander in chief.

Prayuth has certainly failed to deal with the violence in the South. That part is true.

Do not allow the ranks and files to protest on anybody’s behalf, under any circumstances, uniform or otherwise. If the good general’s name has been insulted, he can always sue to clear his name. Respectable news media valued editorial independence, even from their own bosses; let the general public judged the substances of the content in question. Any professional disquiet should be directed at relevant government ministers involved in this case. “I was born in the pursuit of knowledge, never fearing to follow the truth and reason to whatever results they led, and bearding every authority which stood in their way”. Sondhi would certainly seem well qualified to judge failure. He seems to have already forgotten why someone thought it a good idea to put a bullet in his head. I guess there's plenty of room in there.

Time to go fishing for old generals. We need to look ahead not behind.

Sondhi should made a statement to reprimand his editors for using vulgar and rude words. If he doesn't, then he is in collusion with his editors to insult the general and that's distasteful. The general has been magnanimous in his apologies.
