Five die in 10-car pileup

An accident involving 10 vehicles sparked spectacular fires and killed five people Saturday night on the Mittraphap Highway in Klang Dong district of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Police said they got first reports of the pile-up at around 9pm, and rushed to the scene. Officers found a BMW on fire, and called firemen. It took nearly half an hour to extinguish the blaze, after which three charred bodies were found. Police said they believed all were members of the same family.

Another two dead people found in a delivery truck carrying dairy products. Four survivors of the accident were taken to nearby hospitals.

Can see dangerous passing, speeding and tailgating any day on Thai streets and highways. BTW nice Youtube video being broadcast on speedchannel supposedly showing young, hot, sexy female in hot car speeding on city streets and expressway. Good for young drivers to emulate.

Hi-so, Low-so, so what. They're all equally reckless.
It is tragic and sad that vehicular death in Thailand seem to be so frequent and no one raises an eyebrow and the powers that be do anything about it. It seems to be "drive at your own risk".

When the dinosaurs in the Ministry of Education finally get their 'marching orders' and move on, would it be too much to ask, (of the incoming regime), to introduce comprehensive high school lessons in PHYSICS and RISK MANAGEMENT???

These are neglected disciplines and it shows in this country. (3% of GDP squandered on auto accident litigation) OUCH.

Incredibly sad to hear of more innocents killed by the hands of reckless idiots who clearly have no road awareness or driving skill. Hiso is rightly mentioned because it is very unusual for those without money in thailand to afford a motorcycle let alone a high end merc / bmw, Hiso's do have the money and the status quo to live up to also remember.
Also D6 you are so right, the seat belt phobia here is a national disgrace. Some education and proper enforcement is NEEDED

rva - probably the reference to 'hi so's' is the inevitable decision that they were not at fault due to family connections.

So let's get this straight. A Benz traveling fast enough to overtake a double rig (24 wheels) on a downhill section must have suddenly slammed on the brakes allowing the truck to hit it, make sense? What caused the Benz to suddenly slow to a speed under that of the truck, another vehicle? If so then that vehicle should have been traveling slow enough to cause the truck driver to take some precautions to avoid hitting it. I have to agree that the two vehicles (BMW vs Benz) were probably racing and the BMW couldn't get around the truck. I also have to say that blaming a certain financial group for this type of incident is ridiculous.

99% of the speeders who come up behind me are BMW's and Mercedes...they drive super fast and have no regard for speed limits...they deserve what they get.

D1: What do you mean by "Hisos"? Seems rather unfair to single them out considering nearly EVERYBODY in Thailand drives recklessly.

The unforward way of Thai thinking is dangerously prevelant in their driving habits. I have nearly been killed by my current girlfriend's sister while speeding down backroads after I told her to slow down, and I was laughed at by my ex-girlfriend for suggesting that she put her seatbelt on, with the whole "whatever will be will be" attitude, as if the extra two seconds to put on a seatbelt was too much trouble and it made more sense to risk death over slight discomfort.

really sad that these things happened, car accident I guess is the number killer in this country. An accident that can be prevented if we learn how to be responsible and carefull enough while driving.
