US told: 'Don't call us Burma'

YANGON - Myanmar has protested against the US State Department's continuing use of the country's former name Burma, state-run media said on Saturday.

"Myanmar strongly objects the usage of the words 'Burma', 'Burmese Government' and 'Burmese Military' in the US embassy's press release not using the name recognised by the United Nations and the whole international community," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

On Thursday, the US embassy in Yangon criticised a military offensive against ethnic rebels despite a ceasefire announced by the "Burmese Government" on Jan 19.

Okay how bout this; Don't call us, Burma.

"#4! Read up on your history! BURMA of today didn't even exist as a nation before the British came (and left). The "Myanmar" that Marco Polo mentioned has very little to do with today's BURMA.

disc6: It is The Kingdom of the Netherlands. Holland is in fact the name of two provinces North- and South Holland. Though Holland is used very often for the whole of the country. Anyway I don't think it bothers anyone in The Netherlands or Holland. Myanmar is different in my opinion cause Birma was used in protest against the junta. Now that seems to be over it is less important so use both of them.

@#6 I guess it's easy for someone who hasn't been under occupation and thus regarded as a second class citizen by the i Invading masters to look upon this as a non important issue.

Does the FM has nothing more important to do than babbling about this unimportant issue, afterall a name is just a name as long as people understand what it means...Burma actually resembles the sound Bamar which is in fact the name of the majority of people in Myanmar whereas Shan, Kachin, Karen, Kayah or Karenni, Rakhine are all ethnic tribal names and is widely used in the country...but all these people are the citizens of Myanmar, just like people from UK or GB they are all British citizens yet they still want to be Scots ,Irish and even Welsh but not only as English. So let them call what they like, we only need good governance.

Just like Netherlands should be called Holland, or is it Holland should be called Netherlands. Does anyone know the correct name for Dutch land?

  • Discussion 5 : 26 Jan 2013 at 15.025

whatever names you call them, they are the same people and country. Changing names without any reform on your policies and political outlook has no bearing. They are just confusing themselves and other people.

@#2! Read up on your history! The name of the nation was Myanmar before the British made it a part if their empire. Marco Polo mentioned Myanmar in his book. A few British generals changed the name to Burma, and a lot of other state and city names as well, that are now slowly changing back to what the people in the , now free, nations are calling them.

  • Discussion 3 : 26 Jan 2013 at 14.183

    Whats in a name?
    Future or Past?

  • Discussion 2 : 26 Jan 2013 at 13.492

Geez.....a few unelected and loathed SLORC army generals sat around their plush officier's club one night and decide to re-name their country, without ever bothering to poll the millions of people that they're oppressing. Now they're declaring themselves 'democratic' and insist on the international community calling their country 'Myanmar'. What do their people call themselves?
