Laos-Thailand freight rail link by 2015

The 3.5km railway link from Vientiane to the Thai border will be able to handle freight by 2015, news reports in Laos said Monday.

Laos would build the required facilities at its end of the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge by 2015, the Vientiane Times reported.

"Construction of a yard to store containers and lifting facilities will begin at the end of this year," said Bounchanh Xaybounheuang, a senior official at the Lao Railways Authority.

Why stop at the border?
Why don't build a standard gauge tracks and systems across the bridge for both freight and high speed trains now.

D 2 There is a railway line to Nong Khai. What are you talking about ?????
D 1 The high speed rail network will run from Bangkok to Lao and China. The southern route will connect Bangkok with Singapore and Malaysia.

So back onto trucks, across the bridge, how many trucks? Which companies and who owns them? another reason for no rail link! and each container requiring more palms to be greased.
