Family drug bust in Korat

Police in Nakhon Ratchasima on Monday arrested a woman and her daughter-in-law on drug charges and seized two kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine worth about five million baht in street value.

Umporn Johrasar, 46, and Tipgaysorn Suuktiem, 23, were arrested at a gas station in Pak Chong district after a sting operation that also netted three cell phones. The driver of the vehicle they were in was able to escape, police said.

Mrs Umporn told investigators that her husband and her son are in Ubon Ratchathani prison on drug convictions. Her three grandchildren, aged 2, 8 and 10 years old, will be left without a guardian if she and Ms Tipgaysorn are also convicted, she said.

People commit drug crimes in Thailand because Thai law makes it so very attractive. If the drugs were legal, there would be less crime, and a massive drop in corruption. Also the same or less drug use.

Do you really think that if someone commits a crime by, for example, saying that Buddhism is the one true religion in a Moslem country, that they should punished? That if someone commits a crime by, for example, not bowing down before a holy relic, that they should be imprisoned? That if someone commits a crime by being gay and having consenting sex with another gay adult that they should be punished?

Legal does not mean just.

I do not understand why people spend more money than they earn. And when they have a lot of money to pay off debt, they indulge in crime to make quick money. There is no any excuse for criminal activities. Crime is crime and offenders must be punished as they indulge in these activities with knowledge of law and punishment.

Well, that is good news for the usual suspects: corrupt officials and mafia scum.

It is, as always, bad news for every decent Thai person and for Thai society, who must continue to foot the economic and social costs of this failing policy designed to profit the worst in society and which only exacerbates every drug related problem for individuals, for families and for society.
