Mob burns 'witch' in PNG

PORT MORESBY — A mob stripped, tortured and bound a woman accused of witchcraft, then burned her alive in front of hundreds of horrified witnesses in a Papua New Guinea town, police said Friday.

It was the latest sorcery-related killing in the South Pacific island nation.

Bystanders, including many children, watched and some took photographs of Wednesday's brutal slaying. Grisly pictures were published on the front pages of the country's two largest newspapers, The National and the Post-Courier, while the prime minister, police and diplomats condemned the killing.

    DickFarang, re D1,

    Correct.
Thankfully, the US has made great moral progress these past 300 years, especially with the adoption of a Constitution to which was quickly added a very healthy bill of rights.

Too many other cultures remain mired in deadly and evil superstitions, and willfully reject progress.

D1:...oh I overlooked another thing... the witch trials took place in Massachusetts during the transition from being the Massachusetts Bay Colony to the Province of Massachusetts. The United States wouldn't exist for about another eighty years.

D1: Well I can think of a couple of differences... such as:
    1. They had trials
    2. Method of execution was hanging
    3. They happened well over three hundred years ago

Such ugly, utterly immoral falsehoods still flourish in a few primitive and barbaric traditional cultures?

Let us hope that those types of culture very quickly become extinct. In the meantime, they give the lie to the absurd believe held by some that all cultures are equal or that moral right is nothing but a cultural perception - murder is wrong no matter what a culture says, as many elements of every culture are immoral and irrational.

Not different from the Salem witch trials in the US (1692-1693).
